The Revolutionary Technological Impact on Civil Construction

04/05/2018

The way we build is changing.
And it is expected to undergo even more transformations as new technologies emerge.

Technology is increasingly present in civil construction, and with its support, the construction process is becoming more like that of an automobile assembly line: once the project is finalized, the structure will be assembled using prefabricated materials. The tools to achieve this are already available.

A great example is the 3D printer, which demonstrates the potential for much faster, more efficient, and cost-effective construction.

Planning

In the planning phase, several tools are already available. Augmented reality can help visualize the project in a real-world context. Meanwhile, BIM (Building Information Modeling) enables the creation of virtual models of a construction, allowing for better analysis and optimization of resources and processes. In addition, Big Data can support smarter decisions regarding where to build, which materials to use, and many other factors—by analyzing large volumes of data.

Construction

During the construction phase, drones are now commonly used. They allow for the monitoring of hard-to-reach areas and real-time progress tracking on the job site.

Another technological advancement with the potential to revolutionize the construction industry is artificial intelligence. Researchers are already developing autonomous robots capable of manipulating materials and assembling structures with precision—such as the In situ Fabricator, a project developed by Swiss researchers.

Alongside these innovations are smart buildings, which require infrastructure adaptations during construction—like installing sensors in strategic locations. The development of new materials that help regulate indoor temperature and the use of sustainable materials are also contributing to changes in the civil construction industry.

Knowing how to leverage technology means staying ahead in a competitive market where the goal is fast, cost-effective, high-quality construction that meets client expectations.

Technology has the power to transform the construction process and improve quality of life in a sustainable way, while adapting to the needs of the population.
